As far as we can tell this is the only image in the museum’s collection that shows an African-American at a lumber camp of this time period. One of the photos is particularly interesting as it shows an African-American gentleman front and center in a group shop.
In addition a couple of photos show women and children who were known to occasionally be at the lumber camps but are underrepresented in the museum collection. Not only is there a connection though a specific individual but they also provide a good visual of camps at the time. These photos are however a very exciting addition to the collection. They encounter an unpleasant hitchhiker (Neal) who slashes both himself & Franklin with a wicked-looking knife. Among them are Sally Hardesty, and her invalid brother Franklin. 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre' was loosely based on whose real-life crimes Ted Bundy. A group of five close friends are heading through the back roads of Texas en route to their grandfather's potentially vandalized grave. to see if a Hardesty family grave has been vandalized. Unfortunately not much is known about them other than one photo that identifies the camp location as Corbett, PA. because Kirk works there as a groundskeeper. These photos were passed down through the Newell family. The photographs are of Fred, the Newell Family at the farm as well as several photos of lumber camps. In 1900 at the age of 34 he was killed when he was struck on the head by a falling tree limb, while working at a lumber camp near Corbett, PA.ĭonald Newell, Fred’s grandson, donated a collection of photographs to the museum on behalf of the Newell Family (in addition to a wood beam boring machine). It was not uncommon for farmers to supplement their income by working in the lumber camps during the winter when there was not as much work to be done on the farm. During the winter months he would find work in lumber camps. Fred was a farmer and a carpenter who lived on his family farm in Newelltown, PA in Tioga County. This collection piece was used during demonstrations at the Woodsmen’s Carnival at Cherry Springs Park in the 1950’s by Robert Peffer, who sold chainsaws from his Harmony, PA store. The Lumber Museum does not have a Model 306a in our collection but we do have a Poulan Model 52 (LM2018.6.1A-B) Introduced in 1951, this two-man saw was the first chainsaw to be designed and produced in-house by the Poulan Company. The company was located in Shreveport, Louisiana, making the 306a a nice local option for a “Texas” chainsaw massacre. The Poulan Company was founded by lumberjack Claude Poulan in 1946. In the movie there was a piece of black tape over the brand name but the green case gives it away. The chainsaw used by Leatherface in the “Chainsaw Massacre” was a Poulan 306a.
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” was released in 1974 and quickly became a horror classic. Chainsaws are a popular choice for many a horror movie character, but did you ever wonder ‘what type of chainsaw is that?’ In closing, I'd also like to go out on a limb and make the following grandiose statement: TCM is the greatest horror film of all time! Not bad for Tobe Hoopers' first effort.As Halloween approaches it is a good time to watch your favorite horror movies.

Sitting in the back of a van full of five friends, Pam reads out loud from an astrology book. W hen we are introduced to the soon-to-be-vulnerable youths in Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, they are talking about what the stars portend for their trip. The scares come from the absolutely brutal and bizarre scenarios that befall poor Sally Hardesty. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) I guess everything means something. Gore is not where the scares are in this one. Being banned in so many countries for so long, and having a title that includes the phrase 'Chainsaw Massacre', has seemingly led many people to believe that there is an undue amount of gore in it. In light of all this, I must also say that in some respects, TCM's bark is much worse than it's bite. People who have a taste for the brutally bizarre will probably hit play again after the credits roll. You'll probably notice a look of disbelief on their unsuspecting face.Īnyone who doesn't like being scared will end up being unable to finish this movie. The tension that this movie generates is overwhelming at times, and if you watch it with someone who's never seen it before, be sure to keep your eye on them. Let me begin by saying that there are precious few movies that can actually scare the crap out of you, and this is one of them.
